2: Deploying handhelds wirelessly
Deploying handhelds wirelessly
You can deploy handhelds using the BlackBerry Manager by sending wireless activation passwords to
users. After an activation password has been entered on a handheld, it becomes inactive and subsequent
passwords for the same user must be reset or resent to the handheld. Accented characters are not
supported in activation passwords. You can configure whether users must connect their handhelds to
their computer during the deployment process or carry out the deployment process wirelessly using PIM
synchronization IT policies.
Sending PIM data using the BlackBerry Router
To save bandwidth, you can prevent the transfer of data to the handheld during the handheld
deployment process unless a connection to the BlackBerry Router is established. By default, the
BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the initial bulk load of data during handheld deployment over the
wireless network.
To send PIM data using the BlackBerry Router, the Handheld Manager must be installed on user
computers. During the handheld deployment process, the Handheld Manager connects to the BlackBerry
Router to receive data. To receive data using the BlackBerry Router, users must connect their handheld to
their computer. If the connection to the BlackBerry Router is interrupted, the transfer of data during the
handheld deployment process continues over the wireless network.
